Our First Date

2005, Sculptural kinetic video installation with flat-screen display.

Wall mounted sculpture with four platforms. Our First Date draws on biographical material, rendering the artists in miniature as they visit a Conceptual Art exhibition in Paris in 1990. The tableau includes representations of works by artists On Kawara, Joseph Kosuth, Art and Language, Hans Haacke and others. The figures of Kevin and Jennifer appear in multiple at different stages of their date. Live video cameras capture images of these tableaux, which are then edited into an endlessly looping video and displayed on the adjacent monitor. The soundtrack recreates the audio from Bruce Nauman’s DEAD, a violin playing four simple notes in succession.
